XT Falcon GT information

In 1968 with the XT GT Falcon came a new engine, the 302 cubic inch (4.9 litre) Windsor motor. It boasted an extra 5 horsepower over the XR GT's 289 cubic inch version and an increase in torque from 305 to 310 ft/lbs made 600 rpm higher at 3800 rpm. Wheel rims were widened to 6", with a limited slip differential was fitted as were driving lights, a front anti-roll bar and optional automatic transmission.

The 302 Windsor's compression ratio was increased to 10.0:1, and a limited slip axle was available to put the power to the ground. There was an increase in the rim width to 6 inches, although 185 x 14 tyres were still fitted. These changes, along with some minor revisions to the suspension (including a front anti-roll bar), made the XT a taughter, but more comfortable drive than its predecessor.

The brake setup from the XR GT was carried over, which meant 11-inch front discs and drum rear brakes, although the XT used a dual hydraulic system. For the first time an automatic transmission was available as an optional extra. With a top gear giving 24.25 miles per hour per 1000 rpm the theoretical maximum speed attainable worked out to be 126 mph at 5,200 rpm, and drivers believed 130 mph would be within reach on the long Conrod Straight at Bathurst.

The most headlined XT GT's were the three cars entered by Ford in the London - Sydney Marathon. Masterminded by Harry Firth, the team came home in 3rd, 6th and 8th places to take out the prestigious Teams and Manufacturers' Prizes for Ford and Australia, with Ian Vaughan driving the top placed car.

Between February 1968 and June 1969 1,415 XR GT's were built.

Identifying your XT GT Falcon

XT GT Falcons have a VIN number starting with ‘GE’ if it was produced with a four speed manual transmission and ‘GF’ if it was produced with an auto transmission, followed by four numbers starting with 1 or 2 and all ending in a ‘C'. Eg; GE1234C or GF1234C

XT GT Falcons also had a body prefix and serial number stamped on the radiator support panel passenger side as was stamped on the I.D. plate. Eg; JG33HK12345

XT GT Falcons had an engine code of " W " stamped on the I.D. plate which stood for ' 302 - 4V '

Either ‘L’ for 4 speed manual transmission code or ‘O’ for floor shift auto
